HB 273 is introduced to complete the formation of the City and Borough of Wrangell and the Haines Borough through land entitlements that the state grants to support local governments.

Upon formation each borough receives a general land grant entitlement from the state under AS.29.65.010. This bill would grant 9,006 acres to Wrangell and 3,167 acres to Haines.

The State has an established policy to assist the formation and operation of new local governments by giving land grants that benefit long-term sustainability and address the needs of the residents.

The additional acreage is critically important to provide for the needs of the Boroughs in order to accomplish their economic, cultural, habitat, settlement and resource development goals.
