The City and Borough of Wrangell was formed in May 2008. The State bestows a general land grant entitlement to newly-formed boroughs. The original entitlement to CBW was 1,952 acres; HB 273 would increase the total amount to 9,006 acres. The State has an established policy to assist the formation and provide for long-term sustainability in operation of new local governments by furnishing land grants that will address the needs of residents.

Wilson says that CBW residents have identified areas critical for future energy projects, port development, and other opportunities to enhance the local economy. I live in Wrangell and know the importance of these land selections to the people of Wrangell, Wilson said. I am happy to have helped their newly-formed borough take a large step in the direction of progress.

HB 273 now goes to the Alaska State Senate for consideration.
