(Juneau) - The Alaska State House today unanimously passed House Bill 202, legislation requiring municipalities to hear from homeowners and residents before mandating the installation of sprinkler systems in new construction of one or two-family homes. Rep. Bob Herron, D-Bethel, sponsored the bill.

HB 202 would require a municipality to hold three public hearings over a 60-to-180-day period before placing a mandate on installation of sprinklers in all one and two-family homes. “This bill allows the public and involved parties to have a say, within their own communities, if their friends, families, and neighbors want this type of fire protection system,” Herron said.

Herron says that the bill is a compromise between groups supporting homeowners’ choice and groups representing fire chiefs and municipalities. “None of the involved parties oppose this legislation,” he said. “This will allow Alaska homeowners an extended opportunity to be heard.”

HB 202 now heads to the Alaska State Senate for consideration.
