Resolution Denouncing "Rapist No. 1" Doll Heads to the Governor

(Juneau) - The Alaska Senate today unanimously passed HJR 22, a resolution denouncing the sale of the action figure "Rapist No. 1," based on a character in the movie "Grindhouse." Sponsored by Rep. Anna Fairclough (R-Eagle River), the resolution urges all Alaska businesses and consumers to boycott the sale and purchase of the doll, and asks that Alaskans recognize the severe consequences of rape and denounce the glorification of the crime of rape that the doll represents.

"I am ecstatic that the Senate has joined us in speaking out for the victims of rape, and hope all Alaskans add their voice in saying no to the 'Rapist No. 1' doll," Fairclough said. "Our state's rate of sexual assault is the highest per capita in the nation, and the creation, promotion and sale of a doll with a name like 'Rapist No. 1' is a slap in the face to victims of sexual assault, their families and our state. This resolution is a way to urge all Alaskans to promote a healthy change by boycotting the sale and purchase of this tasteless doll. HJR 22 was written to express outrage at the manufacture, sale, and promotion of this collectible doll and we hope the power decision-makers who receive it take heed and pull the doll from their shelves."

Copies of HJR 22 will be sent to U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez, National Entertainment and Collectibles Association CEO Joel Weinshanker, Amazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos, Walmart CEO H. Lee Scott, Jr., Toys "R" Us, Inc. CEO Gerald Storch, Toy Industry Association, Inc. Chair, National Retail Federation CEO Tracy Mullin, Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell, and the members of Alaska's congressional delegation.

HJR 22 will be transmitted to the governor for signature.
