(Juneau) - The Alaska State House today passed House Bill 360, legislation offering Alaska high school drop-outs another avenue for graduation. House Rules Chair Nancy Dahlstrom, R-Eagle River, sponsored the bill, which would require school districts to submit the names and other information of drop-outs with the director of the Alaska Challenge Military Youth Academy, or ACMYA.

“We can all agree that high school and other forms of secondary education are a major building block in a young person’s life, and an indicator of future success,” Dahlstrom said. “It’s important for us to add the option of the Challenge Academy to our young people, while at the same time making recruitment more feasible and timely for academy officials.”

HB 360 has sideboards to protect parent’s interests before releasing the name, address and last dates of attendance to the academy. In addition, the bill has the following recruitment requirements in place:

  • Students must be between the ages of 15 and 19
  • Students must have been previously enrolled in a school district in the state
  • Plans to transfer or graduate were not provided to the prior school
  • Students have not received a diploma or GED

HB 360 passed by a vote of 33 to 3.

HB 360 now heads to the Alaska State Senate for consideration.
