Legislature OKs Allowing Info Sharing Between Schools, AMYA - Dahlstrom's HB 360 requires schools to share info on drop-outs with Academy to offer youth another avenue for completing their education

Contact : Nikole Hill, 465-3783

Legislation offering Alaska high school drop-outs another avenue to complete their education is heading to the governor. The Alaska State House today concurred in Senate changes to House Bill 360. House Rules Committee Chair Nancy Dahlstrom, R-Eagle River, sponsored the bill, which unanimously passed the Senate April 6. The House passed the bill 34-3 on March 12.

HB 360 requires school districts to submit the names and other pertinent information of drop-outs to the director of the Alaska Challenge Military Youth Academy, or AMYA, at the end of every semester.

"It is essential that these at-risk children are presented with every opportunity to enroll in a program that will help them finish their high school diploma or complete their General Education Diploma (GED)" said Rep. Nancy Dahlstrom (R-Eagle River). "These youth are the future of Alaska. A diploma is a key first step for our children to become productive members in our communities. With the passage of House Bill 360 these young people will be given another chance to achieve success at an early age."

Contact : Nikole Hill, 465-3783

The Alaska State House today passed House Bill 360, legislation offering Alaska high school drop-outs another avenue for graduation. House Rules Chair Nancy Dahlstrom, R-Eagle River, sponsored the bill, which would require school districts to submit the names and other information of drop-outs with the director of the Alaska Challenge Military Youth Academy, or ACMYA.

"We can all agree that high school and other forms of secondary education are a major building block in a young person's life, and an indicator of future success," Dahlstrom said. "It's important for us to add the option of the Challenge Academy to our young people, while at the same time making recruitment more feasible and timely for academy officials."

HB 360 has sideboards to protect parent's interests before releasing the name, address and last dates of attendance to the academy. In addition, the bill has the following recruitment requirements in place:
